• Encapsulated Gram-negative, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive, aerobic, non-motile bacillus within the family Enterobacteriaceae
• Previously classified as Klebsiella
• Notable members include:
  • Raoultella ornithinolytica
  • Raoultella planticola

Management

• Intrinsic resistance to ampicillin from a chromosomal beta lactamase
• Usually susceptible to beta lactam-beta lactamase combinations, cephalosporins, carbapenems, co-trimoxazole, and fluoroquinolones
