- Viral infection
- Malignancy
Destruction/Consumption
- Immune-mediated thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
  - Hepatitis C, HIV, and Helicobacter pylori
- Thrombotic microangiopathy
  - TTP/HUS, other TMAs
Sequestration
- Splenomegaly

Investigations

Rule out secondary causes with hepatitis C virus, HIV, and Helicobacter pylori serology
