Differential Diagnosis
- Common: pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, pneumothorax, pericarditis, and pneumonia
- Cardiac: Dressler syndrome, post-pericardiotomy, post-cardiac injury
- Toxins: asbestosis
- Medications: amiodarone, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, methysergide, minoxidil, mitomycin, oxyprenolol, practolol, procarbazine
- Gastrointestinal: IBD, spontaneous bacterial pleuritis
- Genetic: Familial Mediterranean fever
- Hematologic: malignancy, sickle cell disease
- Infectious:
- Viral: adenovirus, coxsackievirus, CMV, EBV, influenza, mumps, parainfluenza, RSV
- Bacterial: Mediterranean spotted fever, parapneumonic effusion, tuberculous pleuritis
- Parasitic: amebiasis, paragonimiasis
- Inflammatory: reactive eosinophilic pleuritis
- Renal: CKD, renal capsular hematoma
- Rheumatologic:
- Lupus pleuritis, including drug-induced lupus from hydralazine, procainamide, or quinidine
- Rheumatoid pleuritis, Sjögren syndrome
