IgA deficiency

Background
- Decreased or absent levels of serum IgA (<7 mg/dL) with normal IgG and IgM levels in a person age 4 years or older
- Partial deficiency is when serum levels are ≥7 mg/dL but still more than 2 standard deviations below normal
Epidemiology
- Most common primary immunodeficiency, though mostly asymptomatic
- More common in European, African, and Middle Eastern populations, and less common in Asian populations
Clinical Manifestations
- Mostly asymptomatic (85-90%)
- Recurrent sinopulmonary and gastrointestinal infections
- Increased risk of allergy, autoimmune diseases, and celiac disease
- Risk of anaphylaxis to IVIg
- Can progress to specific antibody deficiency or CVID
