- Neisseria meningitidis (classic association)
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Other: Capnocytophaga canimorsus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Leptospira, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus aegyptius, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Viral: varicella-zoster virus, rubeola
- Protozoa: malaria
- Post-infectious, following varicella, streptococcal infection, rubella, or rubeola
- Inherited, from deficiency of protein C (protein S)
