Background

  • Second-generation cephalosporin
  • Spectrum includes MSSA, streptococci, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria meningitides, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Escherichia coli
  • Time-dependent killing
  • Time to peak 3 hours, elimination half-life 1.2 hours

Dosing

  • Typical dose: 250 to 500 mg PO q12h
  • AECOPD: 250 to 500 mg PO q12h for 10 days
  • Uncomplicated UTI: 125 to 250 mg PO q12h for 7 to 10 days
  • Gonorrhea: 1 g PO once
  • Pneumonia: 750 to 1500 mg IV/IM q8h
  • Bone or joint infection: 1.5 g IV/IM q8h
