Background
- Lives in soil and plant debris worldwide
- Fast grower
- White to cream mycelium, sometimes with later areas of green or blueish-brown
- Characteristic bean-shaped microconidia
- Biosafety level 2
- Produces ciclosporin A
Clinical Manifestations
- Most common infection in humans is keratitis, including with outbreaks from contact lenses
- Can also cause endophthalmitis, onychomycosis, cutaneous and subcutaneous infections, septic arthritis, mycetoma, and sinusitis
- In immunosuppressed hosts, can cause disseminated infections with very high mortality
