Background
- Fungal infection of the nails
Management
- For mild cases, topical treatments with over-the-counter antifungals (clotrimazole, tolnaftate) is reasonable
- For mild to moderate cases, topical treatments are recommended:
- Efinaconazole 10%
- Ciclopirox nail lacquer 8%
- Tavaborole
- For more severe or extensive disease, consider systemic antifungals:
Prevention
- To decrease risk of reinfection, sanitize shoes and socks, and avoid walking barefoot in high-risk areas (spas, salons, gyms, locker rooms, bathrooms)
