Background

• Fungal infection of the nails

Management

• For mild cases, topical treatments with over-the-counter antifungals (clotrimazole, tolnaftate) is reasonable
• For mild to moderate cases, topical treatments are recommended:
  • Efinaconazole 10%
  • Ciclopirox nail lacquer 8%
  • Tavaborole
• For more severe or extensive disease, consider systemic antifungals:
  • Terbinafine

Prevention

• To decrease risk of reinfection, sanitize shoes and socks, and avoid walking barefoot in high-risk areas (spas, salons, gyms, locker rooms, bathrooms)
