Background
- Species of mold within the genus Aspergillus
Clinical Manifestations
- Rare cases of infection in humans
- Cases that I could find in Pubmed in October 2024:
- Fungal canaliculitis in an immunocompetent patient, managed with drainage alone1
- Fungal endocarditis in a patient with ALL that was fatal despite voriconazole2
- Disseminated disease in a patient on chemotherapy for MDS3
- 4 cases of invasive fungal pulmonary infection in 3 patients with CGD and 1 with MDS4
- All patients required long courses with more treatment failures than comparable patients with Aspergillus fumigatus
- 2 patients died
- 2 cases of pulmonary infections in patients with malignancies5
- Bronchial infection in a patient with diabetes mellitus that was successfully treated with voriconazole6
- Fungal keratitis in a healthy patient with clinical failure on itraconazole7
Management
- Increased MICs compared to Aspergillus fumigatus and frequent clinical failures of antifungals
- No clinical breakpoints are available given the rarity of the species
