Myroides

Background

• Genus of aerobic, non-motile, non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli within the family Flavobacteriaceae
• Yellow pigmentation
• Characteristic fruity odor
• Ubiquitous environmental organisms
• Species include:
  • Myroides odoratum, a rare cause of cellulitis and bacteremia
  • Myroides odoratimimus, an even more rare cause of infection in humans

Clinical Manifestations

• Rarely causes infections in humans
• Case reports include1
  • Bacteremia
  • Cellulitis
  • Other infections, including ventriculitis, endocarditis, central line infection, prosthetic joint infection, pancreatitis

Management

• Complicated by chromosomal metallo-β-lactamases (TUS-1 and MUS-1), which confer resistance of β-lactams, monobactams, and carbapenems
• Variable susceptibility to aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and co-trimoxazole
