Background
Microbiology
- Group of Gram-positive Shape::cocci
- Commensal oral flora
Species
- Streptococcus anginosus group (previously milleri group): most likely to cause invasive pyogenic infections similar to Staphylococcus aureus
- Streptococcus mitis group
- Streptococcus sanguinis group
- Streptococcus salivarius group
- Streptococcus mutans group
Management
- Most commonly penicillin or ceftriaxone, or vancomycin for resistant isolates
- Penicillin non-susceptibility varies by species
- Streptococcus salivarius group is 80% non-susceptible (in Korea1)
- Streptococcus mitis group is 60%
- Streptococcus sanguinis group is 40%
- Streptococcus anginosus group is 6%
- Ceftriaxone does not predict susceptibility to oral cephalosporins
