Background
- Pneumonia is a common complication of near-drowning and is associated with increased mortality
Microbiology
- Primarily gram-negative bacilli, including Haemophilus influenzae,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas, but also Staphylococcus aureus and streptococci
Management
- Broad-spectrum empiric antibiotics that include coverage for Pseudomonas and other drug-resistant gram-negatives
