Microbiology
- Viral
- Mumps virus: 15-30% of postpubertal males with mumps, unilateral in two-thirds
- Coxsackie B virus, LCMV
- Fungal: blastomycosis
- Bacterial
- May be from contiguous spread or hematogenous seeding
- Includes Gram-negative bacteria, Brucella, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Clinical Manifestations
- Erythema, swelling, and tenderness of the testis
- Usually with concurrent epididymitis or prostatitis
