Constrictive pericarditis

Background
- Thickened, inelastic pericardium restricts cardiac filling
- Includes chronic constrictive pericarditis (more than 3-6 months; most common), transient constrictive pericarditis, and effusive-constrictive pericarditis
Etiologies
- Idiopathic or viral (most common)
- Post-cardiac surgery
- Post-radiation therapy
- Rheumatologic diseases, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, possibly others
- Postinfectious, including tuberculosis and Whipple disease
- Other causes: malignancy, trauma, drug-induced pericarditis, absestosis, uremic pericarditis, IgG4 disease, Myhre syndrome
