Aspergillus udagawae

Aspergillus udagawae

Background

Clinical Manifestations

  • Rare cases of infection in humans
  • Cases that I could find in Pubmed in October 2024:
    • Fungal canaliculitis in an immunocompetent patient, managed with drainage alone1
    • Fungal endocarditis in a patient with ALL that was fatal despite voriconazole2
    • Disseminated disease in a patient on chemotherapy for MDS3
    • 4 cases of invasive fungal pulmonary infection in 3 patients with CGD and 1 with MDS4
      • All patients required long courses with more treatment failures than comparable patients with Aspergillus fumigatus
      • 2 patients died
    • 2 cases of pulmonary infections in patients with malignancies5
    • Bronchial infection in a patient with diabetes mellitus that was successfully treated with voriconazole6
    • Fungal keratitis in a healthy patient with clinical failure on itraconazole7

Management

  • Increased MICs compared to Aspergillus fumigatus and frequent clinical failures of antifungals
  • No clinical breakpoints are available given the rarity of the species
