Background
Risk Factors
- Elderly, people who wear dentures and appliances, people who wear masks, and children who use pacifiers
- Particularly prevalent in patients with HIV or Down syndrome
Etiologies
- Infectious causes include Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Beta-hemolytic streptococci
- Noninfectious causes include poorly fitting dentures, aging skin, contact allergy, nutritional deficiencies, anemia, dry skin, hypersalivation, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis
Clinical Manifestations
- Erythema, cracking, scaling, bleeding at corners of the mouth, usually painful
