  • Step 1: Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible.
  • Step 2: Pull up with steady, even pressure. Do not twist or jerk the tick.
  • Step 3: Clean the affected area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
  • DO NOT:
    • Cover the tick with petroleum jelly, nail polish, soap, or other substances
    • Burn the tick
    • Squish the tick
  • If mouthparts are left behind, leave them alone; they will fall out on their own within a few days and do not contain bacteria
