Identification

Background

  • Found in dry and dusty soil
  • Makes red pigment, hence the name
  • Member if the actinomycetes group
  • Infects domesticated animals
    • Horses
      • In foals, causes pneumonia
    • Goats
    • Pigs
    • Sheep
    • Cattle
  • Can infect immuneocompromised people (HIV, etc)

Presentation

  • Necrotizing pneumonia is usual presentation
