- May be acute, subacute, or chronic (≥4 weeks)
- May be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or non-infectious causes
Diagnosis
- Typically confirmed by lumbar puncture demonstrating pleocytosis, with or without MRI brain
