  • Superficial skin and soft tissue infection of childhood most often caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus
  • Also known as pyoderma or impetigo contagiosa
  • Peak age 2 to 5 years, but can occur in adults
  • An initial papule turns into a vesicle surrounded by erythema, typically on exposed skin
  • The lesions become pustules, which rupture and form crusted lesions
  • If deeply ulcerated, it's called ecthyma
