- Most clinically important member of the genus is Brucella melitensis
- Others include
- Brucella abortus, which causes a milder brucellosis and is found in pigs and cattle
- Brucella suis, which can cause severe brucellosis in humans
- Brucella canis, which rarely causes disease in humans
