- Polymorphisms in ACKR1 gene, which encodes Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC)
- The mutations lead to neutrophils leaving circulation for tissue, resulting in lower peripheral blood neutrophil counts
- The gene mutation is present in about 60 to 70% of people with African ancestry, and may have evolved to impair entry of Plasmodium vivax into RBCs
- About 10% of people with DANC will have an ANC less than 1.5
