Antibiotic prophylaxis for procedures

Indications

Prevention of Surgical Site Infections

• Most operations should get cefazolin
• Consider adding metronidazole for clean-contaminated or contaminated procedures
• Duration less than 24 hours

Prevention of UTI

• Asymptomatic bacteriuria
  • Invasive urological procedures
  • Pregnancy

Prevention of Endocarditis

• Dental procedures that involve ginvial manipulation or periapical region of teeth or perforation of oral mucosa if high risk
  • Prosthetic heart valves
  • Previous IE
  • Cardiac transplant with valve regurg
  • something else
• Not recommended for non-dental procedures including scopes
