Bone marrow biopsy

Procedure

• Left lateral decubitus
• Draping
• Landmarking right PSIS
• Get tray ready
• Gown and glove after cleaning hands
• Clean x3 with Betadine (povidone-iodine) then clear out the centre with alcohol
• Drape sterile field
• Lidocaine without epinephrine, anaesthetize all over
• Aspirate a fluid sample
  • Enter about a cm into bone
  • Remove trochar
  • Count down 3 2 1 while drawing
  • Check first sample for spiculation
• Small cut
• Core sample
  • Enter skin to bone
  • Get solidly placed in bone
  • Remove trochar
  • Goal of 1-2cm
• Clean up, bandage, and have lie on back for half hour
