Identification

  • Facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming, Gram negative bacilli
  • E. aerogines and E. cloacae are most important species

    • Urinary tract
    • Respiratory tract
    • Bacteremia
  • Have an inducible beta lactamase

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Bacteremia
  • Endocarditis
  • Meningitis

Treatment

  • Often resistant to penicillin and ampicillin
  • Vancomycin
