Typhoid and paratyphoid (enteric fever)

  • blood cultures (large volume, like x4), stool cultures, bone marrow
  • biopsy (most sensitive)
  • Salmonella enterica subsp. typii and paratyphii
  • treatment with 3rd gen cephalosporin; avoid FQs due to high resistance rate
