  • Staphylococcus epidermidis group
    • S. epidermidis
    • S. capitis
    • S. simulans
    • ?S. warneri
  • S. haemolyticus group
    • S. haemolyticus
    • S. hominis
    • S. devriesei
  • S. saprophyticus: mainly causes UTIs
  • S. massiliensis
  • S. lugdenensis: has more in common with S. aureus and should never be considered a contaminant
  • Unclear grouping
    • S. lyticans
    • S. pettenkoferi
    • S. petrasii
    • S. pseudolugdunensis

Management

  • Generally resistant to beta lactams
  • First-line: vancomycin
  • Alternatives: linezolid, daptomycin, Septra, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline
