Background

  • Also known as "frozen shoulder"
  • Inflammatory condition in the glenohumeral joint that results in stiffness, pain, and loss of passive range of motion

Clinical Manifestations

  • Gradual onset shoulder pain over weeks to months, followed by decreasing range of motion (active and passive)
    • Specifically, decreased passive ROM with forward flexion, abduction, external rotation, and internal rotation
  • May lose natural arm swing during walking
  • Tenderness around shoulder joint

Differential Diagnosis

  • Cervical radiculopathy
  • Acromioclavicular joint arthrosis
  • Bicep tendinopathy
  • Glenohumeral osteoarthritis
  • Fracture
  • Calcifying tendinitis/synovitis
  • Malignancy
  • Rotator cuff impingement
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
