- Gram-negative bacillus within the family Enterobacteriaceae
- Motile, indole-positive
- Previously identified as Escherichia adecarboxylata
- Environmental organism, in water, food, and other environmental sources, and possibly a member of the intestinal flora
- May be an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients, but can also infect immunocompetent patients (typically in polymicrobial infections)
- In humans, can cause bacteremia, wound infections (particularly after water exposure), pneumonia
- Fairly susceptible gram-negative, like Escherichia coli
