Squamous cell lung cancer

Background

  • A form on non-small cell lung cancer
  • It is the lung cancer with the strongest association with smoking, with 80-90% of patients with SCC having a smoking history
  • Other risk factors include age, family history, exposure to second-hand smoke, and exposure to minerals including asbestos and metal particles

Clinical Manifestations

  • As with other lung cancers, can cause cough, chest pain, dyspnea, hemoptysis, wheezing, hoarseness, recurrent pneumonias or bronchitis, weight loss, anorexia, and fatigue

Investigations

  • Needs tissue diagnosis by biopsy
  • Workup typically includes PET-CT whole body and MRI brain
