Differential Diagnosis
- Epidermoid cyst
- Splenic pseudocyst
- Splenic abscess
- Splenic hematoma
- Intrasplenic pancreatic pseudocyst
- Cystic neoplasm of the spleen
Diagnosis
- Ultrasound and CT are best tests but appearance varies widely
- Most common appearance on ultrasound is an anechoic, smooth, round cyst
- Daughter cysts may be present
- May be able to see layers of membrane
- May be able to see "sand" of protoscolices
- MRI may demonstrate a hypointense rim sign on T2
- Serology with immunoelectrophoresis is sensitive
