Leptotrichia

Background

• Genus of anaerobic, pencil-shaped, Gram-negative bacillus that are part of the normal oral and intestinal human flora
• Rare opportunistic pathogen

Clinical Manifestations

• May cause bacteremia in patients undergoing chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation who develop febrile neutropenia

Management

• Generally susceptible to penicillin and meropenem and clindamycin1
• Occasional resistance to metronidazole
