Staphylococcus lugdenensis

Microbiology

• Coagulase-negative Gram-positive coccus
  • Produces bound, not free, coagulase, so may still be slide-coagulase positive
• Identified microbiologically by decarboxylation of ornithine
• Commensal skin flora, but can cause disease

Clinical Manifestations

• Acts similarly to Staphylococcus aureus in that it can form abscesses anywhere in the body
