• Most clinically important member of the genus is Brucella melitensis
• Others include
  • Brucella abortus, which causes a milder brucellosis and is found in pigs and cattle
  • Brucella suis, which can cause severe brucellosis in humans
  • Brucella canis, which rarely causes disease in humans
