Background

  • Hairy white tongue caused by EBV infection

Etiology

  • Opportunistic EBV infection of the squamous cells of the tongue, typically associated with HIV

Epidemiology

  • Immune suppression, including early HIV

Clinical Manifestations

  • White plaques on side of tongue that cannot be scraped off

Management

  • Treat underlying cause of immunosuppression
