Tinidazole

Background

  • Antiparasitic and antibiotic
  • Active against protozoa and obligate anaerobic bacteria
  • Known as Fasigyn (Pfizer), with 500 mg and 1000 mg tablets

Dosing

  • Giardiasis: 2 g p.o. once
  • Only available in Canada through the Special Access Program

Safety

  • Similar to metronidazole, it can cause a disulfiram-like reaction when taken with alcohol
  • Can cause anorexia, headache, vertigo, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, abdominal pain, pruritus
