Background
Microbiology
- A species of Gram-negative bacillus that includes six subspecies
- Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica is the main subspecies of medical importance, and includes more than 2500 serovars within it
- Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis is the most common cause of salmonellosis in humans
- Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi cause enteric fever (typhoid or paratyphoid fever)
