Background

Microbiology

  • A genus of basidiomycetous yeast
  • Primary human pathogens include:
    • Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (most common isolate)
    • Rhodotorula glutinis
    • Rhodotorula minuta
  • In culture, have characteristic pink yeast colonies, with a capsule seen on microscopy
  • Urease-positive
