Background

Differential Diagnosis

  • Epidermoid cyst
  • Splenic pseudocyst
  • Splenic abscess
  • Splenic hematoma
  • Intrasplenic pancreatic pseudocyst
  • Cystic neoplasm of the spleen

Diagnosis

  • Ultrasound and CT are best tests but appearance varies widely
    • Most common appearance on ultrasound is an anechoic, smooth, round cyst
    • Daughter cysts may be present
    • May be able to see layers of membrane
    • May be able to see "sand" of protoscolices
  • MRI may demonstrate a hypointense rim sign on T2
  • Serology with immunoelectrophoresis is sensitive
