  • Gram-positive coccus that is oxidase positive
    • May see tetrads on Gram stain
  • Normal flora of the mouth and skin
  • Most often a contaminant, but can cause line infections, device infections, and endocarditis; rare cause of VP shunt-associated meningitis
  • Treatment is typically with penicillin or other beta-lactams, or with vancomycin1
