- Gram-positive coccus that is oxidase positive
- May see tetrads on Gram stain
- Normal flora of the mouth and skin
- Most often a contaminant, but can cause line infections, device infections, and endocarditis; rare cause of VP shunt-associated meningitis
- Treatment is typically with penicillin or other beta-lactams, or with vancomycin1
