Epidemiology

  • Most commonly fractured carpal bone

Clinical Manifestations

  • Fall on outstretched hand
  • Pain and tenderness at anatomic snuffbox

Investigations

  • X-ray of wrist
    • Lucency usually seen across the waist
    • May not be visible initially but present on follow-up x-ray

Management

  • Wrist immobilization for 6-10 weeks
  • If not seen on initial x-ray:
    • Wrist immobilization with repeat x-ray in 7-10 days
    • Alternately, CT wrist
