Background
- Aspirated or inhaled fat or oil is engulfed by alveolar macrophages, which die and release the contained oil, resulting in inflammation, giant cell granulomatous reactions, and fibrosis
Clinical Manifestations
- Presents as a non-resolving pneumonia associated with inhaled or aspirated oil
- Cough, dyspnea, and fever, and occasionally weight loss, chest pain, and hemoptysis
- May be acute following aspiration of a large amount of oil, or chronic with repeated exposures over time
