Management
Criteria in Ontario
- If SpO2 <= 90% on room air at rest, then perform ABG on room air at rest (off oxygen for 30 minutes)
- ABG may be waived for end-of-life palliative care, or if patient chooses to self-pay ($300-400/month)
- If SpO2 >91% but desaturates on exertion, can skip ABG and perform independent exercise assessment
- Eligible based on ABG results:
- PaO2<= 55 mmHg
- PaO2 56 to 60 mmHg, if one of the following:
- Cor pulmonale
- Persistent erythrocytosis
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Exercise limited by hypoxemia and documented improvement with supplemental oxygen
- Nocturnal hypoxemia
- PaO2 >60 mmHg, if also has SpO2 <= 88% during independent exercise assessment
