A species of facultatively anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus that includes six subspecies within the family Enterobacteriaceae and order Enterobacterales
Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica is the main subspecies of medical importance, and includes more than 2500 serovars within it
- Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis is the most common cause of salmonellosis in humans
- Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi cause enteric fever (typhoid or paratyphoid fever)
