- Patient is positioned supine
- Longitudinal: landmark is the liver
- Transverse: landmark is the spine
- Positive when
- Collapse >30% with inspiration
- IVC <1.2cm diameter
- IVC:aorta ratio < 0.8 in paeds
- Negative when
- No collapse with inspiration
- IVC >2cm diameter
- IVC:aorta ratio > 1.0 in paeds
