Definition

  • SIRS requires two or more of the following:
    • Temperature >38 or <36
    • Heart rate >90
    • Respiratory rate >20 or PaCO2 <32
    • WBC >12k or <4k, or bands >10%
  • Sepsis is SIRS with a suspected infection
  • Severe sepsis is sepsis with end-organ dysfunction
    • Elevated lactate
    • Decreased urine output
    • Elevated creatinine
    • Elevated INR
  • Septic shock is sepsis with shock despite adequate resuscitation
