- Bacterial
- Chlamydia trachomatis (20-40%), which is the second-most common cause of urethritis after Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Mycoplasma genitalium (20-30%)
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Parasitic
- Viral
- Fungal
- Idiopathic in up to 50%
