Background
- Species of trematode in the genus Schistosoma
Epidemiology
- Intermediate hosts are snails in the genus Bulinus
- Found in Africa (mostly sub-Sarahan), along the Nile valley in Egypt and Sudan, the Maghreb, the Arabian peninsula
Clinical Manifestations
- May be asymptomatic
- Katayama fever less common than Schistosoma manonia and Schistosoma japonicum
- Classically affects bladder
