Background
- Non-encapsulated, non-spore-forming, Gram-negative bacillus with yellow pigment
- Member of the Enterobacteriaceae
- Causes disease mostly in plants, and rarely in humans
- Found on plants, on buckwheat, and in human feces
- About 20 species, of which human diseases have been described with Pantoea agglomerans (previously Enterobacter agglomerans), Pantoea brenneri, Pantoea conspicua, Pantoea eucrina, and Pantoea septica
Management
- Sometimes considered a member of the SPICE organisms
- Reliably susceptible to meropenem, imipenem, ertapenem, and amikacin12
- May be susceptible to chloramphenicol, doxycycline, gentamicin, cotrimoxazole, ceftriaxone, and piperacillin-tazobactam
- Frequently resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid
