Background

• Species of Gram-positive bacillus within the genus Niallia
• Previously known as Bacillus circulans
• Spores found in soil

Clinical Manifestations

• Generally non-pathogenic
• More likely to cause infections in immunocompromised hosts
• Can cause wound infections and bacteremia

Management

• Reliably susceptible to ampicillin, imipenem, levofloxacin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin1
  • Can be resistant to penicillin and cotrimoxazole
  • Usually resistant to clindamycin
